Costa Rica has two major international airports: Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José and Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia. Meet and Greet:

Upon arrival, most rental agencies provide a “meet and greet” service in the airport. After clearing customs, you’ll either head to the rental counter or catch a shuttle to the rental office to check in and pick up your vehicle.

Stay Focused:

Bypass the eager hustlers offering rides or those who tell you your car rental company is out of business. Just say “No Gracias” and continue to the rental car counter or rental car’s shuttle service. Keep in mind that if someone asks to help you with your luggage and you accept that they are expecting a small tip as gratitude for this service.

Pick Up:

Read through our section below on mandatory insurances to that you are well informed and protected from added fees. Also make sure to take photos or a video walk-around of your vehicle before leaving the lot.

Also, check your rental paperwork to make sure any vehicle deficiencies , such as scratches or dents, are noted and make sure your windshield wipers work properly (this was a live and learn for us).

• Driver’s License: A valid driver’s license from your home country is required to rent a car in Costa Rica. If your license is not in English or Spanish, you may also need an International Driver’s Permit (IDP).
• Credit Card: Rental agencies typically require a credit card in the driver’s name for the deposit. This is necessary to cover any additional charges or potential damage fees during your rental period.
• Passport: You’ll need your passport for identification purposes when picking up your rental car. It helps verify your booking and allows the rental company to process the transaction.

Insurance Coverage: What You Need to Know

Insurance is a crucial aspect of renting a car in Costa Rica, and it’s important to understand what’s required and what options are available. Costa Rica has strict insurance laws for rental vehicles, and the following types of insurances are typically mandatory:

Liability Insurance: Also called Additional Liability Insurance (ALI), and is mandatory in Costa Rica. It protects you in case you cause damage to another vehicle, property, or individual. It doesn’t cover damage to your vehicle at all. Upon booking, review the terms to see if this is already included or will be an extra cost at time of pick up.

Loss Damage Waiver (LDW): Also known as Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), it covers damage to your rental car in case of an accident. Most companies offer two types: partial and full.

• A partial damage waiver covers collisions, but includes a deductible (e.g., you pay $1000, and the rental company covers the rest).
• A full damage waiver typically has no deductible, meaning the rental company covers all the costs. Keep in mind, LDW is usually not included in your initial rental booking.

Theft Protection: This insurance covers the theft of the vehicle or parts of it. It may be included in LDW or may require an additional fee. This insurance isn’t normally mandatory.

Additional Insurance Options: Some rental companies offer additional coverage, such as Roadside Assistance, which can be helpful if you’re planning on driving in remote areas or if you want additional peace of mind. 

Don’t purchase 3rd party insurance from booking sites, such as Expedia or DiscoverCars.com. They are usually NOT accepted as insurance coverage by rental agencies in Costa Rica, even though the website offered it as an option when booking your rental.

BEWARE: Make sure to read your rental agreement carefully and ensure that only the additional options you actually want are labelled as accepted as we have had agents add on ones that we didn’t notice within the agreement that cost over $100 USD for a 2 week rental (such as road side assistance and tire/windshield coverage).

4×4 SUVs:

Costa Rica’s more rugged terrain may call for a 4×4. If you’re planning to drive to the beaches of the Nicoya Peninsula, and some in Guanacaste, or explore the cloud forests of Monteverde, a 4×4 is the best choice. These vehicles are designed to handle bumpy dirt roads and wet conditions, especially if you’re travelling during the rainy season.

We normally rent a 4×4 no matter the season, or where we are planning to go, just to cover our bases.

Luxury Cars & Convertibles:

If you’re looking to cruise in style along the Pacific coast or through Costa Rica’s scenic countryside on paved, well-maintained roads, a luxury car or convertible may be up your alley.

Minivans & Family SUVs:

Travelling with a group or family? Rent a larger vehicle with ample space to keep everyone comfortable. Minivans and family SUVs are perfect for group trips and can carry all your luggage, surfboards, or gear for a variety of activities.

Peak vs. Off-Season Pricing

One of the most significant factors influencing the cost of renting a car in Costa Rica is the time of year you plan to travel. Like many tourist destinations, Costa Rica experiences fluctuations in prices based on the season.

Make sure to inquire about any additional fees before you sign the rental agreement (read it over carefully).

3. Windshield Wipers: Check that the windshield wipers work properly. On more than one occasion we’ve rented a car with terrible windshield wipers. This can make driving in rain showers stressful and dangerous due to limiting visibility!
4. Water Crossings: You might find yourself facing rivers running across roads, particularly during the rainy season. While rental car policies frown upon turning your vehicle into a makeshift raft…many brave adventurers do it anyway. If you decide to take the plunge and something gets damaged, you could be on the hook for the repair costs. So best to avoid, but if left with no choice try to keep the “car surfing” to a minimum as it does technically infringe on your rental policy…
5. Filling Up: Many rental agencies in Costa Rica offer a full-to-full fuel policy, meaning you receive the car with a full tank and must return it full as well. If you don’t refill the tank before returning the car, the agency will charge you a premium price for fuel, which is typically much higher than what you would pay at a gas station.
