Location: 40-minute drive north of Tamarindo or 1-hour drive south of Playas del Coco, nearest town is Brasilito.

Good For: Swimming, snorkelling, stand-up paddleboarding, relaxing

Why it’s one of our favs: Usually calm, great place for kids to swim, some snorkelling options

Playa Conchal is nothing short of paradise. With its unique beach of crushed seashells that sparkle under the sun, this beach will take your breath away the moment you set foot on it.

The calm, turquoise waters are good for snorkelling when conditions are right. Whether you’re lounging under the sun or swimming in the crystal-clear sea, Playa Conchal offers pure relaxation.

One of our favourite spots along this bay is at the west end of the beach, known as Playa Puerto Viejo. This hidden gem is mostly frequented by locals, so it offers a peaceful escape with very few tourists.

To reach this tranquil haven, start by heading to Metapalo and then continue north for about 15 minutes, winding through lush, rural countryside.

As you arrive at Playa Puerto Viejo, you’ll be greeted by a parking attendant who’ll guide you to a spot and watch your vehicle for a small fee of around $2 to $4 USD (or 1000-2000 colones).

2. Playa Grande

Playa Grande, Costa Rica

Known for its serene beauty and natural charm, this beach is perfect for those seeking peace and connection with nature. Here, golden sands stretch as far as the eye can see, and the gentle waves beckon swimmers and surfers alike.

Playa Grande is part of Marino Las Baulas National Park—an essential sanctuary for the endangered leatherback sea turtles. If you visit between October and February, you might even witness these majestic creatures nesting on the shore, creating an experience you’ll never forget.

Parking attendants are usually on site to make sure you park safely and where permitted. They also watch over your vehicle—for a small fee.

Playa Grande is easily the top of our picks for 5 best beaches in Guanacaste, Costa Rica! The waves here are perfect for surfing, with consistent breaks that suit both beginners and seasoned surfers looking for exciting rides.

Our kids can happily play in the wide, shallow waters with few worries about strong undertows. The beach is so spacious that it never feels crowded, and with most homes set back, it feels wonderfully secluded.

Why it’s one of our favs: Beachside entertainment and eateries, amazing sunsets, areas that are great for kids to swim

We recommend staying a safe distance from the estuary between Playa Tamarindo and Playa Grande, as it’s home to wildlife like crocodiles and bull sharks. To ensure your safety, always take a shuttle boat across the estuary, as there have been unpleasant encounters when walking through.

What we love about Playa Tamarindo is its vibrant beach town atmosphere, always buzzing with energy. Whether you’re catching some waves at one of its great surf spots or simply enjoying the lively vibe, there’s something for everyone. It’s a perfect spot for families, with safe areas for kids to play and swim.

Here are 6 tips to ensure you have the perfect day at the beach in Guanacaste, Costa Rica:

      1. Park Securely: Remove any valuables or, at the very least, hide them from sight. Like anywhere, vehicle break-ins can happen, especially when items with perceived value are visible. To stay worry-free, park in areas with parking attendants. Although there’s a small fee, they’ll help you find a safe spot and keep an eye on your vehicle, allowing you to fully enjoy your day at the beach!
      2. Protect Yourself from the Sun’s Intensity: The sun is strong, so be sure to pack plenty of sun protection! Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses to stay safe while basking in the tropical warmth. Don’t forget a beach umbrella or tent for some shade when you need a break. Many beaches offer limited shade as the day progresses, especially after midday. Don’t let heat stroke ruin your day at the beach!

      4. Check the Tides for the Best Water Activities: To make the most of your time in the water, check the tide schedules and wave conditions before diving in. Whether you’re looking to ride the waves or enjoy a calm swim, knowing the tides ensures the safest and most enjoyable experience possible.
      5. Respect Nature: Guanacaste’s beaches are breathtakingly beautiful, and they’re home to precious wildlife. Respect the environment by cleaning up after yourself and leaving nothing behind. Be mindful of local animals, and remember, keeping the beaches pristine allows everyone to enjoy them for generations to come.
